Aldabra Atoll is located approximately 1,000 km southwest of the Seychelles and covers 500 km of the Indian Ocean along the southeastern coast of Tanzania. It covers a core protection area of 350 km2. The atoll is composed of four large coral islands that enclose a shallow lagoon. The group of islands is itself surrounded by a larger coral reef. Due to difficult accessibility and geographical isolation, Aldabra has been protected from human influences and thus retains some 152,000 giant tortoises.
