This site is located in the ocean 80 km south of Kyushu Island, and it covers a core protected area of 107 km2. Located at the boundary between the palaeo-arctic and oriental biotic regions, Yakushima exhibits rich flora with approximately 1,900 species and subspecies, including ancient specimens of the sugi (Japanese cedar). It also contains a remnant of a warm-temperate ancient forest that is unique in this region.
