Xuan Zang (602–664) was called Yi Chen before becoming a monk. He was a native of Yanshi in Luoyang, Henan Province. He was generally known as San Zang (master in Tripitaka) and was a Tang Monk. He was a Buddhist scholar, traveller and translator. In 627 A.D., the first year of the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, he commenced a pilgrimage from Chang’an (now Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province) and travelled along the Hexi Corridor, west along Tianshan, across the Cong Ling (Pamirs) and Rehai (Hot Water) to Suyeshui (Tokmak, Kyrgyzstan). He passed through the Big Snow Mountains (now Hindu Kush) and reached Tianzhu (India). He travelled to 110 countries and returned to Chang’an in 645 AD. ‘The Great Tang Dynasty Records of the Western Regions’, a narrative of Xuanzang, provides important information about the history, geography and other details of 110 countries, including India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
