Xiuyan jade is a type of soft jade that is a kind of serpentine produced in Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province. It is mainly composed of soft green fibrous serpentine with low hardness. It can be light green, light yellow and apple green with translucent or opaque bodies. Its surface has a fat-like lustre. It was one of the earliest jade materials used in China, and it is currently abundantly produced. There are several varieties of serpentine jade in the same category, such as the Jiuquan jade mined in the mountainous areas near Jiuquan in Gansu Province, the famous ‘Yeguang (noctilucent) Cup’, which is composed of translucent green jade that contains black spots, the Yixin jade produced in Guangdong, and the Taiwan jade produced in Taiwan (Fig. 7).
