At 5:29 am on March 8, 1966, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in eastern Longyao County, Xingtai area, Hebei Province. The earthquake depth was 10 km. Over 21 days, from 8 March to 29 March, there were 5 successive quakes in Xingtai with magnitudes of 6 or above. The damage area was extensive, and the earthquake caused large numbers of cracks, landslides, collapses, dislocations, surging springs, water level changes and ground subsidence; in particular, ground fissures and sand boils were dominant. The ground fissures stretched in a zone along the Fuyang River, the old Ningjin marsh and the ancient river course. The sand eruptions occurred mainly in the old river course, depressions and areas with loose soil (Fig. 6).
