Wind is a strong force that can erode and move material from one place to another, shaping various landforms. In arid regions, wind and the materials carried by wind can create spectacular landforms by erosion, abrasion, transportation and deposition. Yardangs are landforms formed by erosion and abrasion by strong wind in a constant direction. Wind can also create depositional landforms, such as different types of sand dunes. Fine dust can be blown by strong dust storms to high altitudes, transported long distances and then deposited, forming loess layers.
