This is a world-class mercury mine located in eastern Guizhou Province near the Hunan-Guizhou border. The ore bodies lie in the Middle and Lower Cambrian limestone strata and are composed of numerous layers with high continuity. The Wanshan mercury mine is composed of five large-scale ore deposits, including the Shanmudong mega-scale mercury mine, the Zhangjiawan mercury mine, and 15 small- to medium-scale ore fields. Due to its large reserves, the mine has become the world-famous ‘Mercury Capital’. From the Ming and Qing Dynasties until the establishment of the Republic of China, this mine was the major mercury mining area in Guizhou Province. According to legends, mining occurred here during the Warring States period. It is now a national mining park (Fig. 3).
