Central Mountain Songshan

Songshan is one of China’s Wuyue (Five Peaks) and is also known as Zhongyue (Middle Peak). It is located north of Dengfeng City in Henan Province and is part of the northern Qinling Mountains. Songshan mainly consists of Taishi Hill and Shaoshi Hill. It is a fault-block mountain composed of Archaean, Proterozoic, Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks, and the five geological periods are the origin of its name ‘Five Generations Inside One Hall’. There are 72 peaks; the main peak, Junji Peak (Song Peak), has an elevation of 1,491 m and towers over the Yuzhong (Central Henan) Plain with a relative height difference of more than 1,000 m. It looks extremely spectacular. Songshan has a long cultural history. It was called Songgao Mountain and Chong Mountain during the Xia and Shang Dynasties, respectively.
