Synonym: Glass fragment

A vitric fragment is a type of volcanic ash. Due to rapid cooling, the erupted magma is in a glassy state, and the bubble in the fluid diffuses outwards due to the decreasing pressure. The volcanic glass that contains the gas bubbles will eventually burst to form glass fragments with the shapes of bows or chicken bones. Vitric fragments are generally smaller than 0.5 mm.
