This site is situated in the Komi Republic in the northern Ural Mountains in Russia, and it has a core protection area of 32,800 km2. The Virgin Komi Forests protect the Ural Mountain tundra as well as the largest remaining old-growth coniferous forest in Europe. For more than 60 years, scholars have monitored and studied the vast area of pine woods, poplar forests, beech forests, peat bogs, rivers and natural lakes.
