Trinomial Nomenclature

Trinomial nomenclature refers to the names of taxa below the rank of species, which are composed of three parts. The first part indicates the genus, the second part indicates the species, and the third part is the subspecies. This is an expanded version of the binominal nomenclature, where a subspecies name is added after the species name. An example is Lithostrotion planocystatumminor, where Lithostrotion (columnar coral) is the genus, planocystatum (plank-like) is the adjective, and minor (small) is the second adjective. The label ‘subsp.’ (abbreviation subspecies) is sometimes used before the second adjective. Directly translated, the nomenclature in Chinese is ‘small plank-like columnar coral’ or ‘plank-like columnar coral, small subspecies’. The adjectives for species and subspecies are written in lowercase letters, and the name is italicized.
