This type of swamp landscape is also called an intermediate swamp, and it is a swamp type between low swamps and high swamps. They mainly form in valleys or high floodplains along the upper courses of rivers. The water is supplied by groundwater, the river or precipitation. The main vegetation includes shrub bushes, Carex, dwarf bog birch (Betula fruticosa), oil bog birch (Betula ovalifolia), marsh tea (Ledum palustre), leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata), silver moss (Bryum argenteum) and Sphagnum moss (Sphagnum palustre). The peat layer is relatively thick, and the swamps can be used for farming when drained. These swamps are mainly located in the Changbai Mountain, Daxing’anling and Xiaoxing’anling regions (Fig. 29).
