This is a new interdisciplinary field combining earth science and tourism. The meaning of tourism earth science has become better defined with the continuous development of the discipline. In 1985, when the Chinese Academy of Tourism Earth Science was established, its definition was included in the second article of the constitution, which stated ‘Tourism earth science is a new interdiscipline utilising the theory and methodology of earth science for the survey, research, planning, development and protection of tourism resources’. In 1991, Anze Chen and Yunting Lu edited ‘Introduction to Tourism Earth Science’. They proposed a more in-depth meaning, stating that ‘tourism earth science is a new branch of earth science.
