This is a landscape that was formed by dissolution through holes in the middle of Tianmen Mountain. Located approximately 8 km south of Zhangjiajie, the cave developed in thick Cambrian limestone, dolomite and dolomitic limestone. This highest peak of Tianmen Mountain is 1,518 m high, and it is a karst mountain with steep cliffs on all sides. Tianmen Cave is a dissolution cave in the middle of Tianmen Mountain. It is 98 m long, 37 m wide and 131.5 m high. The cave bottom is 1,260 m above sea level. Some people have suggested that Tianmen Cave formed as the result of the dissolution of a doline, but confirmation of its evolution is subject to further detailed study (Fig. 21).
