Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) Landscape, Changbai Mountains

This is a landscape composed of the crater lake of a dormant volcano. The famous Tianchi in Changbai Mountain is a well-preserved composite volcano that formed due to several causes. It is located in southeastern Jilin Province near the North Korean border. Its main peak, Jiangjun Peak, has an elevation of 2,749 m and lies inside North Korea. The Tianchi Volcano experienced stages of shield formation (1.20–2.77 million years ago) and cone formation (40,000 to 58,000 years ago) during the late Pleistocene and Holocene. The Holocene eruptions were mainly associated with the accumulation of fallen pumice. The 1668 and 1702 eruptions are described in detail in historical records. Their volcanic ash fell onto the townships along the east coast of Korea at distances up to 150 km.
