This is the largest lake in the eastern coastal region of China and the third largest freshwater lake. It is located on the boundary between Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces to the south of the Yangtze Delta. The lake surface looks like a crescent with its convex side pointing to the west. The lake shore is irregular with many bays and is dotted with alternating promontories and indentations. There are more than 40 islands in the lake, and Dongting West Hill is the largest. The lake has a surface area of 2,428 km2. The entire Taihu Lake system includes more than 180 large and small lakes, and with the associated large and small rivers, they form a dense water network like a cobweb. The eastern and northern shores have several low mounds, such as Dongting East Hill, Lingyanshan, Huishan and Majishan. The hills and lakes form spectacular scenery for tourists.
