Stratigraphy is the study of the characteristics and properties of all stratified or layered rock formations in the Earth’s crust. Classifying these rocks into different types and units allows the spatial relationship with the relevant time sequence to be established. Stratigraphy covers the shape, distribution, lithology, fossil content, geological age, geophysical and geochemical rock properties, associated geological relics, formation environment and evolutionary history of these rocks. The stratified rocks within the Earth’s crust, including sedimentary rocks (consolidated or unconsolidated sediments), volcanic rocks and metamorphic rocks, are included in stratigraphy.
