To make stratigraphic comparisons and compile geological maps, it is necessary to categorize rock layers or rock bodies with similar characteristics into units, which are called stratigraphic units. Because of the diverse characteristics of rock strata, the classification of stratigraphic units is also diverse, including chronostratigraphic units, lithostratigraphic units, biostratigraphic units, sequence stratigraphic units and magnetostratigraphic units. Stratigraphic units, especially lithostratigraphic units, are key controlling factors of rock landforms and landscape types and thus are important to geotourism.
