The regulations and criteria for surveys are set by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA). They include the types of tourism resources, designation of survey areas, operational requirements (e.g., basic data collection, completion of forms, picture collection, and report compilation), report inspection and acceptance. In 1992, CNTA presented the ‘Specifications of survey on tourism resources in China’ (trial version). The specifications are listed in five chapters and categorise tourism resources into two major groups, six sub-groups and 74 fundamental types.
