Sinoceras is a genus of cephalopods and is one of China’s unique fossils, which is where it gets its name. It is shaped like a pagoda or bamboo shoot, so it also has the nicknames Pagoda Stone, Bamboo Shoot Stone or Exorcism Stone. Sinoceras fossils are considered higher quality if their internal structures have been exposed along the central longitudinal section of the shell by weathering. They are mined from the Middle Ordovician (480 million years ago) purple or light greenish grey limestone strata with mud cracks in western Hubei and Hunan Provinces. In 1994, a 162-cm-long piece of Sinoceras fossil was unearthed in a limestone layer in Hubei Province. This fossil is by far the largest invertebrate fossil ever found in China (Fig. 31).
