Sinian System in the Three Gorges Area of Shaanxi East

This section, which is located in Xiling Gorge in Yichang, Hubei Province, is China’s best developed and well-studied section in the early stage. By 1924, Li Siguang had established a standard strata bed sequence at this location. Initially, the Sinian System was divided into four formations: the Liantuo Formation (Nantuo sandstones), Nantuo Formation (Nantuo moraine), Doushantuo Formation and Dengying Formation. At the second working meeting on stratigraphic dating convened by China’s National Commission of Stratigraphy in 1999, the meaning of the Sinian System was redefined. The newly defined Sinian System is limited to the Upper Doushantuo Formation and Dengying Formation of the original Sinian System. On this basis, the Doushantuo Stage and Dengying Stage were established in accordance with the fossil assemblage characteristics.
