This geopark is located in the Morena Mountains between Ossa-Molina and the geological region of southern Portugal, and it covers an area of 1,774 km2. It became a global geopark in 2011. The geopark is one of the largest natural parks in Andalusia and has a rich geological heritage that has promoted sustainable economic development through geotourism. Most of the rocks in the geopark can be dated back to the Precambrian, Palaeozoic (540 million years), Permian (290 million years) and Early Triassic (258 million years), but some of the sedimentary rocks exposed in the southeastern part of the park were formed 20 million years ago during the Miocene.
