Rural landscape is the most basic unit of the rural territorial complex. It refers to a unified and coordinated complex in rural areas with a consistent natural geographical basis, in which the utilization and human impacts are similar, the structures and functions are similar or interrelated, and the elements are interconnected and mutually restricted. It is a comprehensive representation of several parameters, such as the economy, culture, society and nature, in rural areas. Since rural areas are mainly occupied by people engaged in agricultural production, which is characterized by the interweaving of economic and natural reproduction, rural landscapes experience an ongoing transition from natural landscapes to cultural landscapes. Based on this, a rural landscape can be considered a human landscape (or cultural landscape) with some of the characteristics of a natural landscape.
