This is a granite landscape characterised by slender ridges with bald peaks. The orientation of the regional tectonics controls the orientation of the ridges, whereas vertical fissures perpendicular to the ridge control the existence of the round bald peaks. Extensive structural fissures, a warm, hot and rainy climate, and intense chemical weathering and erosion by water are important factors in forming this landscape. Through these geological processes, the Hengshan granite has been transformed into elongated mountain ridges with bird head-shaped bald peaks along them. This landscape is unique in the Five Mountains. ‘Flying Hengshan’ is an appropriate description of this landscape, which is also called ‘granite landscape – Hengshan type’ (Fig. 23).
