When a heart-shaped sand bar in a river becomes tall, lateral erosion on both sides of it can become more intense, causing the bar to permanently stand above the water surface, even during the flood period. Juzi (Tangerine) Island in the Xiangjiang River in Changsha and Chongming Island in the Yangtze estuary are typical examples of river islands. The Shanghai Chongming Island National Geopark was established on the basis of a river island (Fig. 13).
