These rainforests are located on the border between the provinces of Antsiranana and Mahazanga in northeastern Madagascar. The core protection area covers 4,796 km2. The heritage site is composed of six national parks in the eastern part of the island. The rainforests that have survived to this day are critical to sustaining ecological evolution processes and are necessary for supporting the unique biodiversity of Madagascar Island. Madagascar separated from the mainland 60 million years ago, and the animals and plants have evolved in isolation.
