Quaternary geology is the geology of the Quaternary Period, which is the most recent period of the Earth’s development, and its associated geological events. It involves studies of the geological background, temporal and spatial distribution of the associated geological events, evolution and driving mechanisms. This topic covers extensive areas such as geological dating, sediments, strata, palaeontology, ancient humans, palaeoclimate, palaeosols, palaeogeographic changes, neotectonic movements, volcanic activities and volcanic deposits, palaeokarst development and cave deposits, ancient earthquakes, palaeogeological disasters, the evolution of ancient hydrological conditions and Quaternary mineral reserves. Since most landscape tourism takes place in landscapes that formed during the Quaternary Period, Quaternary geology is closely related to tourism earth science.
