This geopark is located on the beautiful Greek island of Crete in the southern Aegean Sea. It covers an area of 1,159 km2 and became a member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2004. Mount Phoerotote and the northern coast of Crete are the two important attractions of the geopark. Mount Phoerotote is the most beautiful mountain on Crete, and the top of the mountain is 5,000 m above the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Rock columns and outcrops are clearly exposed on the island. Geological structures and landscapes of different scales can be seen. Large faults, fossil-bearing sites, caves, valleys and plateaus, folds and fascinating geomorphological structures provide a foundation for many thousand years of unique culture.
