This term has a Greek origin meaning early primitive life. The Proterozoic Eon is the second unit in the history of crustal evolution; it spans from 2.5 billion years ago to 542 million years ago over a continuous interval of 1.958 billion years. The Proterozoic Eon is divided into the Palaeoproterozoic Era (Pt) (2.5 to 1.6 billion years ago), Proterozoic Era (Pt2) (1.6 to 1 billion years ago) and Neoproterozoic Era (Pt3) (1,000 to 542 million years ago).
