This is the largest inland freshwater lake in China. It is located in Bohu County on the southeastern side of the Yanqi Basin. It was formerly called Xihai (West Sea) and Tangweiyu Sea. In the middle Qing Dynasty, its name was changed to Bosten Lake, which means ‘oasis’ in Ur. It is also called Bagrash Lake. The lake has an elevation of 1,048 m, an east-west length of 55 km and a north-south width of 25 km. It has a triangular shape, a surface area of 988 km2 and a water storage volume of 9.9 billion m3. There are dozens of small lakes along the southeastern corner of the lake. Bosten Lake and the nearby snowy mountains, lakes, oases and deserts form a picturesque landscape like a painting, which has been called the ‘Xanandu’ on Earth (Fig. 23).
