The German ancient beech forest is an outstanding example of the ongoing biological and ecological evolution of the post-glacial terrestrial ecosystem, and it illustrates the diversity of beech species in the Northern Hemisphere. The reproductive diffusion pathway is a crucial component of this environment. Five new forests in the heritage site cover an area of 44 km2. In 2007, the Slavonic and Ukrainian forests on the World Heritage List covered 293 km2. This world heritage site is located in three countries (Slovakia, Ukraine, and Germany) and has since been renamed ‘Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests in the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe’.
