This geopark is located in Pingliang City in Gansu Province. With its elevation of 2,123 m above sea level, it is the ‘first mountain of the west’ along the ancient Silk Road. It became a national geopark in 2004. The geopark is characterised by landforms that developed in Cretaceous purple sandstone. Kongtong Mountain is in the Liupanshan Ranges and was shaped by weathering, water erosion and collapse, and it forms the unique northern Danxia landscape. The Emperor visited this area in ancient times, which was recorded in historical records. Taoist temples and monasteries have been built in this area since the Han Dynasty.
