Peipiaosteus is a genus of Acipenseriformes under the subclass Chondrostei. Acipenseriformes primarily have cartilaginous endoskeletons with some degree of degradation of an external skeleton (scales), leaving arrays of longitudinal bone plates. Therefore, this fish almost had no scales. Peipiaosteus is small (approximately 20 cm long) and has a fusiform, slightly flat head, obtuse snout, some lines of small lateral scales and a crooked tail. They have been discovered and excavated in the Cretaceous rocks in the Beipiao area, Liaoning Province. Fossils with complete forms, exquisite shapes, and contrasting colours with the surrounding rocks are the most valuable (Fig. 14).
