Synonym: Rock block field landscape
This is a landscape in permafrost regions. In these regions, the temperature is permanently below zero (−5 to −15 °C), and physical weathering is severe. Under such low-temperature conditions and due to the effect of plucking, abundant rock pieces and gravels are left behind on the ground, and this landform is called a block sea or a rock block field. Block seas are generally located in the ground with a slope less than 10°, where no horizontal movement takes place. The formation of a block sea is generally associated with rock block masses, such as granite, basalt, sandstone and quartzite (Fig. 19).
