This deposit is located in the lower part of a gabbro mass that formed in a magma body in its late stage of development. The gabbro mass trends northeast and is divided into sections by faults and the Jinsha River. Located in Panzhihua City, southwestern Sichuan Province, the Panzhihua vanadic titanomagnetite deposit comprises six ore sections, namely, Zhujiabaobao, Lanjia Volcano, Jianbaobao, Daomakan, Gongshan and Nalaqing. In the winter of 1944, Cheng Yuqi sent Li Chunyu a letter stating that the Panzhihua titanium magnetite ores might contain vanadium and suggesting that the ores be examined for vanadium. Sampling and analysis showed that the ores contained vanadium. This made the deposit world famous. The discovery turned Panzhihua from a remote mountain ridge into a city of 850,000 residents and a shining pearl along the Jinsha River (Fig. 6).
