This Palaeogene section includes the lower part of the Shanghu Formation and the upper part of the Nongshan Formation, and it is dominated by purple-red siltstone that is rich in fossils of mammals, ogastropods, ostracods and charophytes. The Danxia Formation is located above this system and consists of purple-red sandstone. The Neogene is represented by the Dongxuanguan Formation and the Xiaolongtan Formation. The Dongxuanguan Formation is composed of lacustrine deposits of gravel, sand and clay. The Xiaolongtan Formation was deposited in a swamp environment in a hot and humid climate; hence, it contains lignite and peat. The Palaeogene-Neogene section in the western Nanxiong Basin is located north of Hongshizhai-Pingkeng Shitang-Shangxiuren Line 1 and is composed of purple, grey-green, green-grey fine clastic rocks of the Luofozhai Group and red, coarse clastic rocks of the Danxia Formation.
