Obsidian is a rock composed of acidic volcanic glass. It occasionally contains small quantities of phenocrysts and crystallites. It is usually black and has a dense texture, a vitreous lustre and conchoidal fractures. Obsidian has a minimal water content; i.e. the H2O+ content is less than 2%. Its appearance is just like a piece of shiny coal.
