This geopark is located in central Europe in northern Hungary and southern Slovakia. It covers an area of 1,587 km2. It became a global geopark in 2010. The park contains 63 settlements in Hungary and 28 settlements in Slovakia, and it is dominated by hills, gorges and basins. The iconic building in the park is the Somoska Castle, which was built on basalt and displays a unique combination of natural and cultural landscapes. The national border between Hungary and Slovakia passes under the castle. The rolling hills, volcanic plateau, and volcanic peaks in the park form beautiful scenery. The mountain peaks serve as a natural barrier that allows the area to maintain its unique local customs and traditions. It is a perfect blend of cultural landscape and geological history.
