Neotectonic Movement

A neotectonic movement is a recent crustal movement. The term ‘neotectonic movement’ was first proposed by Richarter in 1932 and Krans in 1933, and it was later systematized by Obruchev in 1948 to become a branch of geology. Scientists have several interpretations of the time of neotectonic movements. Nikolayev defined it as tectonic movements that occurred since the Neogene Period. Schulz emphasized that neotectonic movements are tectonic movements that formed modern landforms. Chinese scientists have adopted the ‘post-Neogene’ interpretation. Later, based on its important role in shaping China’s modern landforms, several scientists proposed the ‘late Upper Neogene Period’ (3.4 million years ago) as the beginning of neotectonic movements.
