This region is located near the border with Albania on the shore of Lake Ohrid in southwestern Macedonia. Ohrid City is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe; most of the buildings in the city were built between the seventh and nineteenth centuries. The heritage includes the oldest Slav Monastery (St Pantelejmon) and iconic murals that were made in the eleventh to fourteenth centuries. The murals are said to be the most important iconographic artwork in the world after the collection in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
