National Park System, Peru
Peru has nine national parks with a total area of 818 km2, which represents 2.27% of its total land area. The National Park System of Peru serves as an example of safeguarding natural ecosystems by prohibiting the direct exploitation of natural resources and the immigration of outsiders by law. Visits to these national parks for scientific, cultural or educational purposes are encouraged by the government. Huascarán National Park and Manú National Park, respectively, were added to the World Heritage List in 1985 and 1987, respectively, due to their natural significance. In 1990 and 1992, Río Abiseo National Park was added to the World Heritage List for its cultural and natural values, respectively.
