In 2002, President Omar Bongo announced that more than 10% of the country’s national heritage would be used for nature conservation with the designation of 13 national parks and the establishment of a national park system. This system was established to protect gorillas and forest elephants in the tropical rainforests of Africa. Only Costa Rica is comparable to Gabon in terms of the proportion of the country’s total land area designated as national parks. In 2007, Lope-Iocanda National Park was added to the World Heritage List as a mixed cultural and natural heritage site due to its outstanding diversity of natural ecosystems and cultural landscape value.
