In 1956, seven national parks were established in Finland. An additional 12 national parks were opened in 1982. By the end of 2005, there were 35 national parks. Metsahallitus (a state-owned forest and park service company) is in charge of all affairs related to national parks. The national parks in Finland cover nearly 8,150 km2, representing 2.5% of the country’s land. In 2007, 1.7 million tourists visited Finland’s national parks, half of which visited Pallas-Yllastunturi, Oulanka, Urho Kekkonen and Nuuksio.
