The Brazilian government established the first national park, Itatiaia National Park, in 1937 based on the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. There are currently 67 national parks, including two marine national parks. Tumucumaque National Park is located in the Amazon Basin and covers an area of 36,000 km2. It is the largest national park in Brazil. Iguagu National Park (1986), Jau National Park (2000), Chapada dos Veadeiros and Emas National Parks (2001) have been listed as World Heritage Sites. Serra da Capivara National Park was listed as a cultural heritage site on the World Heritage List in 1991.
