National Park System, Bolivia
National parks play a core role in the protection of nature reserves in Bolivia. As of 2008, Bolivia had 13 national parks. In 1939, the government of Colombia launched Parque Nacional Sajama, the first national park in the country. In September 1995, the Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park was established; it has a total area of 33,996 km2 and is the largest national park in Bolivia. In 2001, Noel Kempff Mercado National Park was added the World Heritage List. In Bolivia, Integrated Management Natural Areas are usually set up on the outskirts of national parks to serve as buffer zones to protect the core of the national park.
