Narrow gorges develop from cliffy gorges. The valley slopes are very steep, but the valley floor has been widened slightly and accommodates small gravel shores or bedrock terraces. These gorges form in regions subject to significant neotectonic uplift. Narrow gorges are common in the Tongtianhe (Heavenly River) section in the upper Changjiang (Yangtze River).
