This geopark became a global geopark in 2011. It is located in the eastern part of Yuchi Prefecture in Japan and has an area of 248 km2. It became the fifth Japanese global geopark after the Toya-Usu, Itoigawa, Uzen and San’in Kaigan geoparks. The coastline of this geopark has been uplifted due to plate movements and earthquakes. It preserves the very old cultural traditions, such as collecting and burning charcoal.
