This park is located along the border between the Eastern and Central Provinces of Kenya, approximately 150 km northeast of the capital Nairobi. It has a core protection area of 1,420 km2. Mount Kenya, which is 5,199 m above sea level, is the second highest mountain in Africa. As an ancient extinct volcano, it may have reached an elevation of 6,500 m when it was active (3.1–2.6 million years ago). The 12 glaciers on the mountain are melting rapidly, and another 4 secondary peaks are located at the top of the U-shaped glacial valley. Rugged glaciers and slopes covered by forests have made Mount Kenya the most attractive geomorphologic landscape in East Africa.
