A mirage in Chinese is also known as the ‘City on the Sea and Sea Dragon’s Buildings’. This is a naturally occurring optical phenomenon in which light rays bend as a result of the differential density in layers of air and produces a displaced image of distant objects. Mirages often occur on the sea surface and in the desert. They often appear on the Penglai Sea near Shandong Province in China. In the past, people believed that it was a building formed by the breath exhaled from the Shen dragon, so it was called the Shen scenery (Fig. 20).
