Miguasha National Park, Canada

This national park is situated on the southern coast of the Gaspé Peninsula, Province of Quebec, Canada, and has a core protected area of 0.87 km². The palaeontological fossil sites in the park are acknowledged as the most outstanding representative of the ‘Age of Fishes’ in the Devonian, and they contain fossil moulds traced back to 370 million years ago. Five of the six groups of fish fossils from this period have been excavated from the upper Devonian Escuminac Formation. The fossils of Cyclopterus lumpus, which are the most common and best-preserved species in the park, have the highest scientific value because this type of fish was the predecessor of quadrupeds, land vertebrates that walk on four legs and breath air.
